Summary

When sheltered American good girl Allyson “LuLu” Healey first meets laid-back Dutch actor Willem De Ruiter at an underground performance of Twelfth Night in England, there’s an undeniable spark. After just one day together, that spark bursts into a flame, or so it seems to Allyson, until the following morning, when she wakes up after a whirlwind day in Paris to discover that Willem has left.

Over the next year, Allyson embarks on a journey to come to terms with the narrow confines of her life, and through Shakespeare, travel, and a quest for her almost-true-love, to break free of those confines.

Letters from Father Christmas

What I Thought

I read the If I Stay duology a couple years ago, and absolutely fell in love with Gayle Forman’s writing.  Just One Day has been on my TBR ever since.  For Christmas, I received the Just One bind-up, and was so excited to finally have the chance to read it and it did not disappoint!

I think my favorite thing about this novel was the writing.  Gayle Forman just has such a beautiful writing style.  I especially loved reading her descriptions!  Her descriptions of Paris truly made me feel as if I were there.  The whole European adventure side of this novel was my absolute favorite part!

Another thing I loved was Allyson, herself.   She was such a relatable character.  While some of the things she did irritated me, she felt realistic.  Her character growth and development was so well done, too.  You really get to see her grow up, over the course of a year, and I so loved reading about it.

Honestly, I’m still a bit undecided about Allyson and Willem’s relationship.  I wanted to love it, and there are aspects that I did love, but there were also parts that I felt unsure of.  I’m excited to read Just One Year, and see how I feel about it after that.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book!  Just One Day is one of those books that are hard to review without spoiling anything, because I don’t want to give anything away.  I will say though, it has great characters and beautiful descriptions.  This is one book that I will not be forgetting any time soon!  I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an adventurous and romantic read.
