Summary

For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.

Perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver and Karen Russell, Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Where the Crawdads Sing

what i thoughtThis book. This book!! I don’t even know where to begin when it comes to reviewing Where the Crawdads Sing.  I’ll be honest, I only read this book because everyone on Bookstagram talked about this book daily.  I barely even knew what it was about, but I knew it must be good because the library waiting list was huge!! 😂  Where the Crawdads Sing was one of the best books I’ve read in a very, very long time.  It is truly deserving of every ounce of hype and praise it has received!

One of the things I loved, and the thing that first drew me into the story, was the rich atmosphere. The descriptions in this book are so incredible. I could feel the heat, smell the air, and see all the sights. I truly felt like I was in the marshes of North Carolina. I loved reading all of the nature descriptions as well. I really love wildlife, and Delia Owens writes in such a way that really conveys such a deep appreciation for nature and animals.

While the descriptions are what drew me into this book, the characters are what kept me hooked! Oh my word, the characters in Where the Crawdads Sing were absolutely phenomenal. They were all so well-written, fleshed out, unique individuals. Then there was Kya. What an incredible main character! She displayed such strength, courage, and independence.

At the heart of it, this book is about survival. Getting to read about Kya and how she learns to survive in life was absolutely captivating and also such an emotional experience. I felt so many different emotions while reading this book.

Overall, I just really, truly loved this book. Where the Crawdads Sing was one of the best books that I have read in a very long time. Come the end of 2019, I have absolutely no doubt that it will be on my Top Ten of 2019 list. I have so many more things I could say about this book, but I want to keep it spoiler free. So instead, I’ll say this: If you’re looking for a book with unforgettable characters, stunning descriptions, absolutely phenomenal writing, with a touch of mystery and romance, then this book is for you! You will not regret reading this one!
